Harnessing IoT for Community Development in Higher Education: My Published Research in Diversitas Journal

Introduction
I am honored to share my latest publication in Diversitas Journal, titled “Harnessing the Internet of Things for a Community Development Program for Higher Education Institutions Towards Integration with Society 5.0: A Review.” This work represents a culmination of my ongoing commitment to integrating technology, education, and community development in the Philippines and beyond.
Published in March 2026, this article contributes to the special issue Sustainability, Ethics, and Internationalization: Pathways to Responsible Global Scholarship. It reflects my vision of how IoT and AI-driven innovations can empower higher education institutions (HEIs) to lead in shaping sustainable, human-centered communities.

Research Focus

The study explores how the Internet of Things (IoT)—a network of interconnected devices—can be embedded into community development programs of HEIs. As we move toward Society 5.0, a paradigm that balances technological advancement with human-centered values, universities must play a pivotal role in bridging innovation with social responsibility.
Key themes include:
Human-Centered Design: Ensuring technology serves people, not the other way around.
Integration of Emerging Technologies: IoT, AI, blockchain, and big data applied to community systems.
Sustainability and Self-Sufficiency: Empowering communities to thrive through digital transformation.
Policy Alignment: Supporting national strategies that emphasize the role of HEIs in economic growth and social development.
Methodology
This systematic literature review analyzed 62 recent publications on IoT and community development. Selection criteria included author expertise, research quality, and advocacy.
Significance
This research underscores the transformative role of HEIs in Society 5.0. By embedding IoT and AI into community programs, universities can:
- Align academic initiatives with sustainable development goals (SDGs).
- Strengthen their relevance in local and global contexts.
- Drive innovation that directly benefits marginalized communities.
